Let’s nourish the future—

—one drop at a time!

The Story

The vision for establishing a milk bank in our town begin with a coincidental meeting of two mothers and their babies. Rose, my wife, was a nursing mother at the time, following the recent birth of our first son, Romeo. She donated her breast milk supply to another nursing mother from our village who was struggling to produce enough for her newborn daughter, Dalilah.

When we met Dalilah, she was just 6 pounds and was at high risk for infections, underdeveloped organs, and feeding difficulties. But thanks to the generosity of Rose, who donated breast milk, Dalilah received the nourishment needed to survive those first critical months. Dalilah is now a healthy, thriving toddler — all because people like Rose decided to make a difference.

The Process

  1. Donor Screening:

Women who wish to donate breast milk must go through a thorough screening process. This includes a medical history review, blood tests (to screen for infections like HIV, hepatitis, and other potential risks), and interviews to ensure they meet the criteria for safe milk donation.

  2. Milk Donation:

Once approved, donors collect their milk at home, following specific guidelines on how to safely express, handle, and store the milk. The milk will then be transported to one of the approved drop-off sites.

  3. Milk Processing:

Upon receipt, the milk will be safely stored until it is processed into a powder using a process called freeze-drying. This process retains all the vital minerals and nutrients and creates a shelf-sustainable formula that lasts up to 3 years when stored correctly.

  4. Milk Distribution / Malnourishment Program

The formula will then be transported and distributed to the most vulnerable infants in Guatemala, including but not limited to infants born premature, babies with medical conditions, or those whose mothers are unable to nurse or produce an adequate amount of breast milk for their baby.

We have partnered with Mountaintop Promises and Casa Ixchel, two Guatemalan-based organizations who work to improve community health outcomes. Our partners will execute distribution of the donated breast milk and monitor babies on a monthly basis.
